Back to the Future

There comes a point in everyone’s life when you realize that your parents are nothing more than you in a few years.  They are kids who beat you to the punch.  It’s a calming idea to know this.

As a child you always see your parents as these other worldly people who have no relation to you or your experiences.  It’s impossible that they had to go through what I went though.  It’s impossible they were at one point like me.  It’s impossible I will ever be their age.  But that’s all lies.  They were your age, they have been there, and they did the same things you do.

I once read that Bob Gale, the writer of the movie Back to the Future thought of the story of the movie because he found his parent’s year book and wondered if he could go back in time and hang out with his parents would he see them as cool or dorky.  I wonder if I would hang out with the 24 year old versions of my parents.  I wonder if the 24 year old versions of my parents would hang out with me.

For Jason: .9999… = 1

My brother Jason will love this one. According to this site .999… = 1. And here’s how the prove it.

a = 0.999…
10a = 9.999…
10a - a = 9.999… - 0.999…
9a = 9
a = 1

We humans are sick.

I was flipping through the channels tonight and came upon an Ultimate Fighting Championship match on Spike.  Is this how far we’ve come?  Have we not moved forward from fighting gladiators?  Why do we still allow violence to be entertainment?

The most popular video games typically involve you killing another person.

Paintball allows you to shoot someone without killing them.

The best part of our sports are when cars crash, people get hurt, or when fights break out.

Our music is full of fictional killings and slayings.  As are our books and movies.

Why do we glorify violence so much?  Why do we allow it to be in so many aspects or our lives?  Why do we look up to those who hurt others?

It’s sad.  It’s very sad that we have allowed ourselves to be overrun by graphic images to the point that we now consider hurting others a form of entertainment and a source for a cheap laugh.

Open Source Garden

Open Source software are like flowers. Even though you can find the flowers out there for free, you can’t expect to make your garden flourish without spending some money.

Target

The wife and I were at Target the other day looking at DVDs.  I was looking under their Comedy section and what did I find?  World Trade Center.  Strangely no one around me found it funny, so I laughed alone.

Have I gotten slower, or has the world gotten faster?

Like everyone else outside of China, I drive to work.  Nothing special, just a 10 minute commute from house to job.  I pass a few churches, a post office, a bowling alley, and a radio station.  But it’s not what I pass that I care about, it’s about what passes me….everybody else!

Now that I’m out of college and married, have I simply slowed down behind the wheel, or has everyone else sped up?  I believe it’s the latter.  I’m driving just as fast as I always did (a.k.a. the speed limit) but it seems that it’s simply too slow for all the other drivers.

Why do drivers hate me for driving the speed limit?  Is it such a cardinal sin to follow the posted speed limit?  Is it my fault that I don’t want a ticket?  Is it bad that I like to follow the law?  Is it my fault they are in a rush?

I pass a turn off for a school on my way to work, and it’s sad how many parents speed past me in excess of 15mph over the speed limit, speeding up on yellow lights to run the red,  that I eventually pass as they turn toward the school.  Why didn’t they just leave earlier?  Why endanger you, your kid, and all the other drivers?  That’s stupid!

You hear me GA and SC drivers!  Drive the freakin’ speed limit idiots!

No Flag For You!

Geez!  A High School in North Carolina has banned the students from wearing flags on any clothing, including our own Red, White and Blue.  According to the local NBC affiliate the school wanted to ban certain flag from being worn, but in the effort of being fair they had to give a blanket ban.  This begs the question, what flags did they want to ban the students from wearing?  What flags out there are so offensive that they simply just be banned in order to retain common decency?

Dear Comcast, I’m Not Alone

It seems I’m not alone in my problems with Comcast.  It seems that The Consumerist has daily posts about how crappy Comcast’s service is and how their only priority is to get more money.  It’s sickening that companies are allowed to trample their customers like this.  It makes me increasing glad that websites like The Consumerist exist.  It allows the customers to finally be heard.
