Thank God You’re Here
It was with much excitement that I sat down with my glass of sweet tea and switched the televsion over to NBC. Typically my boob tube watching is limited to The Office on Thursdays, but the plugs for Thank God You’re Here sparked my improv interest. So at 9:00 I sat ready and willing to laugh at the ‘off the top of their head’ comedy stylings of four guest celebrities, but unfortunitly the laughs never came… nor did the celebries for that matter.
The format of the show is simple. A performer is dressed up and possibly given a prop. They are then pushed through a door into an acting scene that always begins with the line that conveinitly is the name of the show, Sorry This Is The Best We Can Do Thank God You’re Here. The performers have never seen the set before, they have never seen the script before, and they have never seen top billing of their name before. The performer must then craft the scene to be hilarious using their God given talent for improv, of which only the camera man has any unfortunitly.
The show is hosted by David Allen Grier, straight off his 5 year stint as a door greeter at Walmart. Unfortunitly his hosting job for this show differs from his previous job in that I often times point and laugh at the door greeters at Walmart. His attempts to be funny and comical reminded me of Martin Lawrence. You chuckle when you first see him because you are surprised he still has a job in show business, then you slowly bite through your tongue in agony because he still has a job in show business.
This VD on the face of comedy is judged by Dave Foley. Its obvious he did not write any skits for The Kids in the Hall and instead decided to use his “talents” for NewsRadio, a show that put Andy Dick in the households of millions everynight. Someone will burn forever for that casting call I’m sure.
Overall the show was extremely off balance and lacking any real sence of comedic timing. It seemed the performers were only attempting to hit one line zingers instead of going for an overall funny scene. This is perfectly fine if the performer has the chops to pull this off, but not a single one of them did. Every joke fell flat. It was amazing. I’ve heard better jokes from John Kerry and Michael Richards.
Can this show be saved? Yes. Can the show be funny? Yes. Can NBC invest extra money into the show to get real talent? I doubt it. I forsee this as being a vehicle for them to display the comedy skills of actors on their own network. I bet next week we will see the guy in the background of the bar in My Name is Earl be a celebrity preformer, the tiolet lady on 30 Rock, the guy who holds the camera on The Office who you only see his arm, Tracy Morgon, etc. I’m sure all these has beens will pop up on the show, and the audience will cheer and yell and screem for them like they are someone special.
If tonight’s show was anything like the rest of the series will be then I’m sure there are millions of people like me who will see the axe coming for the show and scream at the top of our lungs “Thank God You’re Here…..take me first! “
